Exfoliate, soften, and moisturize your skin with a homemade coconut citrus sugar scrub. It’s infused with essential oils and made with pure, all-natural ingredients.

I have a sweet tooth. My mom says I get it from my grandma. I also inherited her dimple. Little Bear has the same dimple in his right cheek, and he has a sweet tooth, too.
I try not to give him refined sugar, but he eats blueberries like candy. If I am baking cookies or brownies that call for granulated sugar, I will use coconut or maple sugar, which are healthier options.
Several months ago, I was making a lot of water kefir. Those grains require sugar water. It’s neat how they can turn sugar into something healthy.
I’m not currently making water kefir, but the kitchen cabinet is full of sugars. I still wanted to transform all of that turbinado, sucanat, brown, and white sugar into something beneficial. Homemade coconut citrus sugar scrub was the answer.
I used to spend more than I care to admit on a similar sugar scrub from a boutique — and it wasn’t even organic. This make-it-yourself version costs only cents and the silky smooth results are just as impressive. You really can get a spa glow without leaving the comforts of home.
Made from organic, all-natural ingredients, a homemade coconut citrus sugar scrub is a delight for the senses. It’s like a healthy and hydrating serving of homemade lemonade for your skin to drink up.
Plus, it’s fun and simple to make. It’s a great way to pamper yourself and nurture your skin. This moisturizing scrub makes a wonderful handmade gift for your loved ones, too.

How to Use Homemade Coconut Citrus Sugar Scrub
- Stir the sugar scrub to evenly distribute the oils.
- Gently massage damp skin in a circular motion with a big pinch of the sugar scrub.
- Continue until you have covered your entire body.
- Rinse well with warm water and pat dry.

Notes
- You can use whatever type of sugar you have on hand; however, the texture will vary based on the kind. You could up the coconut factor by using coconut sugar. Additionally, you can do a blend of sugars. For example, half a cup of brown sugar and half a cup of white sugar.
- I recommend using organic ingredients and unrefined coconut oil.
- Upon settling, natural separation of the ingredients may occur. You can stir the sugar scrub with your finger or a small spoon before use, if necessary.
- Citrus oils increase UV sensitivity, so you may want to avoid going out in direct sunlight after using them. Personally, I like to use this homemade coconut citrus sugar scrub as part of my nighttime skincare routine.
- With the exception of the lips, I do not recommend using this sugar scrub on the face because facial skin is more delicate and sensitive.
- You can apply the scrub with soothing self-massage motions to improve circulation and reduce stress.
- Exfoliating skin helps to reveal healthy new skin cells, but you don’t want to overdo it. Be gentle, and depending on your skin type, use the scrub in the bath or shower up to four times a week.
- The oils can make the shower floor slippery, so be careful.
- Try not to get any water in the scrub, so it will last longer.
- Mason jars work great for storing the sugar scrub. Be sure to replace the lid after each use.
- If properly stored, it should last at least several months. You’ll be able to tell if it has expired because it will look and possibly smell differently.
