Add a touch of nature to your decor with a Himalayan salt lamp. Decorating with salt lamps can make any room look warm, inviting, and effortlessly chic.

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve seen any bears, and I wonder if they’re already settled in their winter dens. This curiosity reminds me to enjoy more restful moments, and the darker evenings and colder nights make me want to spend even more time snuggling with my boys. They also inspire me to make our home feel extra warm and cozy.

One of the simplest — and prettiest — ways I’ve found to do this is with Himalayan salt lamp decor. They provide warm, soft light and look beautiful in nearly every space, any time of year. Seeing them also reminds me to rest and breathe deeply.

It’s questionable whether they improve indoor air quality, but the subtle salt lamp is a great way to bring a little of the great outdoors inside. I especially appreciate this quality during these colder months when we aren’t spending as much time outside. It’s like having our own little salt cave to nestle in on the mountain.

What is a Salt Lamp?

A salt lamp is a hunk of pink salt crystal (or a basket of these salt crystals) with a light source.

Possible Benefits of Salt Lamps

Over the years, there have been a lot of claims made about the benefits of Himalayan salt lamps. I’d like to believe that they help purify the air and emit beneficial ions, but I realize that these assertions are mostly anecdotal.

Do salt lamps actually do anything? Well, for starters, they create a warm, dim glow, reminiscent of candlelight. Since they don’t emit blue light, which can negatively impact sleep and circadian rhythms, they are especially useful in the evenings.

Even though it’s up in the air as to whether salt lamps can reduce airborne allergens and EMF exposure, they can help beautify your space. There may not be any scientific studies to show that they can boost your mood, but they can help set the mood of a room.

While they are not a substitute for a high-quality air purifier (or even an air-purifying houseplant), salt lamps can make your home feel more comfortable. Personally, being around a salt lamp makes me feel more peaceful, which is still a benefit, even if it might be a placebo effect.

Reasons for Decorating with Salt Lamps

Himalayan salt lamps provide aesthetic appeal.

Salt lamps complement a wide range of decor styles, like bohemian and minimalist, as well as a myriad of color palettes, from neutral pastels and earth tones to glamorous golds and bright, bold combinations.

They vary in size and shape; however, most can fit in small spaces.

From the nightstand to the computer desk, salt lamps can light up corners and make an entire room feel more serene.

They are decorative works of art, and they are beautiful even when they are not lit.

How to Decorate with Salt Lamps

Salt lamps can help create a relaxing ambience in any area of the house, whether on a bookshelf or by the sofa. Here are a few rooms where the soothing light of a salt lamp is especially lovely.

Living Room

They won’t illuminate the whole room, but salt lamps provide soft light in the living room, which can promote peace and calm.

Reading Nook

A salt lamp can make a reading nook feel even more comfy and cozy with its gentle glow and natural beauty.

Bedroom

Pink Himalayan salt lamps are a sleep-friendly lighting option that can make the bedroom feel more romantic and relaxing.

Home Office

Whether it’s near the computer or a charging station, adding this organic element creates juxtaposition and can make the area feel more balanced.

Bathroom

Himalayan salt nightlights and candles can elevate spa vibes in the bathroom.

Notes for Decorating with Salt Lamps

  • Himalayan salt lamps do ‘sweat’ if the environment is humid or damp.
  • Children and pets may try to lick them, which is not advisable but should be safe as long as it’s not excessive.
  • Make sure you’re using a lamp with properly certified wiring and compatible bulbs.
