Homemade stovetop popcorn is a delicious, healthy snack that’s quick and easy to make.

Almost every night after supper, Little Bear asks me to make popcorn, and I happily oblige. After all, I have cozy memories of warm bowls of popcorn eaten before bedtime at my grandparent’s house. Sharing a big bowl of homemade popcorn is a lovely way to enjoy restful moments as a family.
This simple stovetop popcorn is much healthier than the microwave bags of my childhood — and it’s even more delicious. The man of the place says it is the best popcorn he’s ever had.

Tips for Making Healthy Stovetop Popcorn
- Use a large pot with a lid. Even though it’s heavy, I tend to reach for my cast iron Dutch oven. Stainless steel is a good choice, too.
- Don’t turn up the temperature too high. I heat the oil at medium heat and no higher, otherwise it might burn.
- Starting with just two or three kernels will let you know when the temperature is just right.
- Position the lid so that steam can escape; this will keep the popcorn crunchy.
- While the kernels are cooking, shake the pot a few times to prevent the popcorn from burning.
- Listen closely to the popping and turn off the heat whenever it slows down.
- Looking to make this tasty snack even healthier? Use sprouted popcorn kernels, which are more nutritious.

How to Make Stovetop Popcorn
Add coconut oil and three popcorn kernels to a large lidded pot over medium heat.
Once the three kernels have popped, add the rest and place the lid so that steam (not popcorn) can escape.

While the popcorn cooks, shake the pot so that it doesn’t burn.
Turn off the heat when the popping slows.
Pour into a bowl and sprinkle with natural sea salt and non-fortified nutritional yeast to taste.
