Homemade vegan sourdough French toast is quick and easy to make. This plant-based version is sweet, soft, and crispy.

There’s something special about French toast. It’s a classic dish with a certain je ne sais quoi.
From fat and fluffy French toast at Sarabeth’s in NYC to my dad’s delicious baked French toast for the holidays, I’ve enjoyed many memorable meals with this breakfast on my plate. Most of them were made with milk and eggs, but not this vegan sourdough French toast.
It tastes just like traditional French toast, if not better. (Sometimes, I jazz it up by adding a little orange zest to the dipping mixture — I do love citrus fruit!) Plus, it only requires a handful of pantry staple ingredients.
I like to make this simple meal with my homemade einkorn sourdough bread, which is rustic and sturdy. It makes a scrumptious weekend brunch, and we’ve even had it for dinner during the week.

Tips for Making Plant-Based French Toast
- Try to use day-old bread. It soaks up the batter better.
- Slice the bread thick.
- You can use any vegan milk. I’ve made this with cashew, almond, oat, and coconut milk.
- Don’t soak the bread too long or it will get soggy.
- I recommend using a cast iron skillet for pan frying the bread.
